Embarking on a cruise ship is a great way to experience new cultures, see great places, make incredible memories and try something new. For many, cruises are the only kind of holiday that they’ll entertain, simply because everything they want and need is under one roof. A huge amount of restaurants, swimming pools and water parks, live entertainment, even cinemas, spas and ice bars all complemented with great staff and luxurious suites. However, cruising isn’t everyone’s idea of the holiday of a lifetime. While some people revel in the idea of luxury and everything under one roof, others dread the idea of being trapped on a boat in the middle of the ocean, where the risk of high seas and highly contagious illnesses are rife.
Here we’ll look at 4 reasons why people are wary of travelling on cruise ships.
Illness
We witnessed the harrowing news reports of families who found themselves quarantined on cruises ships all over the world after the coronavirus spread like wildfire between cabins, decks, passengers and crew alike. Many fatalities were recorded, while others were confined to their rooms for weeks, waiting to be told when they could leave. If you have a friend or relative that caught the virus from a cruise ship, click the link. Before the coronavirus outbreak, passengers also had to deal with e. Coli and salmonella outbreaks, leading to vomiting, diarrhoea and in some cases, hospitalisation.
Going overboard
No one ever intends to go overboard, but the risk of falling into the icy depths below is enough to put many travellers off. And if you add alcohol into the mix, you can see how easy it is to slip over the side with many high-profile cases being reported over the years.
Cruise ships suffer from crime
Cruise ships aren’t just filled with happy holidaymakers. They’re also a magnet for thieves and criminals. From theft to fights, even sexual assaults. So, even though it’s not widely reported, cruise ships aren’t exempt from crime!
Sinking is rare – but not unheard of
The chances of a cruise ship sinking are rare; however, it has happened in the past. From historical tragedies such as the RMS Titanic to more recent tragedies such as The Costa Concordia which partially sank off Italy’s west coast back in 2012. If you’re worried about signing up to be in a disaster movie, then cruise ships probably aren’t for you!
